I started in this industry for a love of acting. I stay for my utter disdain of “actor math.”
If you aren’t familiar with the term it’s because I just made it up.
Here is what it refers to:
Listening to casting directors, you will hear, on average, for every 100 actors who audition for a role, ONLY 10 show the skills needed to book the part. Just to be clear, they are saying 90% of actors seen for any given role suck (their word, not mine).
90%?!?!? ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME!!!!
I am guessing, you didn’t become an actor for the love of rejection. And as an actor, or a parent of an actor, you may be questioning why you ever thought of getting into professional acting in the first place.
Believe me, I feel your pain.
I didn’t become an acting coach for the love of listening to actors (or their parents) complain about being rejected all the time.
As an acting coach, I teach ACTING IS TRUTH. I believe the foundation of being a successful actor (or being a successful parent of an actor) requires ACCEPTING THE TRUTH and the willingness to act accordingly.
And the TRUTH is-
There are more acting jobs available today than ever in the history of the world. With access to an endless stream of tools, acting techniques, and expert advice at your fingertips, along with the ability to create and submit audition tapes from your own living room, it should be no surprise to any serious actor — if you’re not having the success you want that you only have yourself to blame.
However, I believe that unlike everything else in your life, (like dating the wrong guy, failing the math final, or getting that haircut) THIS ONE’S NOT YOUR FAULT!!!!
I’m not here to tell you how all the other teachers, coaches, or industry professionals are wrong. In fact, I may be the only one saying, “Everyone is right!” All the methods shared by our industry experts have been “proven” to work. Some actors swear by the “old” methods and book jobs and even win Oscars. Some actors swear by the “new” methods, and book jobs, and even win Oscars. But nothing has changed the “actor math.”
Any other industry would question a “job training” that could only produce a 10% success rate. But as far as our industry is concerned when a “proven” method doesn’t work 90% of the time—It’s YOU that needs more classes, or more auditions, or more followers, or more confidence, or more credits. You need to get better headshots, find stronger representation, or create bigger opportunities. And it’s you who needs to “pay your dues,” and accept working with bad writing, or bad scene partners, or bad directors. In other words, you are told, if you’re not getting the results you want it’s because you aren’t working hard enough, you aren’t “right” enough, or you aren’t lucky enough.
AND IT’S INFURRUATING BECAUSE IT’S ALL A FREAKING LIE!!!!
Do you know who also book jobs, and even win Oscars? Un-trained actors. Actors with no representation, little to no previous credits, or social media presence. And actors who are clearly not over their own insecurities.
If you were to question this, you would most likely be told that acting is hard and talent is rare. In other words, no matter how hard you train, or talented you are, those who can master the skills TO ACT will always be the exception to the rule.
Personally, I find that answer hilarious!! Not funny ‘ha-ha’, funny peculiar. See, when it comes to the TRUTH something is either true or untrue. Therefore, TRUTH cannot be contradicted and there are no exceptions.
I don’t know about you but ….
I FIND IT ABSOLUTELY MADDENING WHEN PEOPLE MAKE STUFF UP EXPECTING EVERYONE ELSE TO BELIEVE IT!
Unfortunately, I neither have the skill-set and sunny disposition to get a “real job,” nor would I ever wish that fate on even my worst industry enemies. So, as much as I sometimes want to go full out ‘Cersei Lannister,’ Season 6 Finale on this freaking industry and blow the whole thing up, I have chosen a less messy more win-win solution.
MY MISSION IS FOR US TO FLIP THE ACTOR MATH.
Like you, I also have a dream. My dream is to be a part of an industry that isn’t (90% of the time) at each other’s throats, made up of those believing the blame falls on actors who can’t act, writers who can’t write, casting directors and other reps who won’t give new talent a chance, directors who don’t respect the actor’s process, or producers who care more for profit than artistic value.
LIES! LIES!! LIES!!! LIES!!!! LIES!!!!!!
As an acting coach, I can’t change what projects studio execs choose to produce or how casting directors choose to run their audition process. What I can do is offer you the TRUTH about YOU, ACTNG, and this INDUSTRY. Because the TRUTH is, if ACTING is what you honestly want to do- You have a 90% chance of becoming the success you were born to be.
Actors are trained to question everything. Yet, very few actors question the meaning of the “actor math” itself. When you do, you find there is VERY LITTLE TRUTH to the 90% failure rate reflecting a lack of talent, lack of opportunities, or an un-fair industry. So, the key to becoming a successful actor is to QUIT ACTING ACCORDIINGLY.
When you Quit Acting, you don’t give up your dreams. You find out what’s holding you back… and QUIT IT.
